During the Global Civil War, Thomas Riley Edwards was a rival pilot of famed Skull Squadron Commander, Roy Fokker, and was later assigned to the Grand Cannon Project at Alaska Base during the years leading up to, and during, the First Robotech War.
Along with Lisa Hayes, he survived the destruction of the Grand Cannon after it's single firing. He was badly injured in the destruction (notably the lose of his right eye), lost the woman he loved during the destruction, and was just climbing out of the wreckage as Robotech Defense Force Skull Leader, Rick Hunter, was flying away with Lisa Hayes.
During the years following, his hatred of Rick Hunter grew into a hatred of the Robotech Defense Forces, and his hatred of the enemy forces during the First Robotech War grew into Xenophobia and paranoia.
He did rejoin the defense forces and was assigned to the SDF-3 mission to find the homeworld of the Robotech Masters as the commander of the SDF-3's ground forces.
The SDF-3 launched, and arrived in orbit of the homeworld of the Robotech Masters, Tirol, along with two stowaways, Pop Idol Lynn Minmei and her singing partner Janice Em. Shortly afterwards, they were attacked by the Invid, and the following battle damaged the SDF-3's fold engines, preventing it from returning to Earth.
The battle ended with the Ghost Squadron taking former capitol building of Tirol, and deactivating the Invid Brain controlling the Invid Inorganic Mecha.
Shortly afterwards, the U.E.E.F. was contacted by the Sentinels, a group of alien freedom fighters trying to free their homeworlds from the Invid. An alliance was made, and Major General Rick Hunter, Admiral Lisa Hayes-Hunter, and other U.E.E.F. soldiers left to help the Sentinels in their fight.
During this time, Edwards used the Invid brain and made a secret alliance with the Invid Regent, became obsessed with Lynn Minmei, and began a campaign to take over the U.E.E.F., and return to Earth as a conquerer.
Upon the return of the U.E.E.F. soldiers participating the Sentinels mission, Edwards was discovered to be a traitor, put on trial, found guilty of treason, escaped, kidnapped Minmei, killed Ghost Squadron soldier, and the cousin of Lynn Minmei, Lynn Kyle, stole a prototype ship that Dr. Lazlo Zand developed, the Icarus, and escaped from Tirol, crippling the SDF-3, and injuring Admiral Lisa Hayes-Hunter in the process.
He joined up with his Invid allies, and made his way to Optera, but was followed by Vince Grant. The Regent was killed in the battle, and Edwards took control of the Invid.
The Regent's, and now Edwards, Invid were eventually defeated by the U.E.E.F., Edwards was killed in an abandoned Genesis Pit.
The technology that his loyal scientists and soldiers developed, with the aid of a secret ally, was adopted by the U.E.E.F. and dubbed Shadow Technology.
